If someone was to ask me what I think they should add to their morning routine, it would be this. It is so important for overall oral hygiene!
I think everyone should invest in this inexpensive little tool.
WHY TONGUE SCRAPE?
I’m all about holistic methods. I had read a lot about Aryuveda during my Yoga Teacher Training, we took a little test to figure out what our “Dosha” was, it turns out I’m a Vata. Click here to find out yours. This has nothing to do with tongue scraping, but it's fascinating.
When I read into the characteristics of my Dosha, it made a lot of sense and I was interested to learn a little more! About a year and a half ago I spoke to an Aryuvedic doctor who gave me a lot more insight into it. We had a two-hour call and during that call he had asked to see my tongue, I was like umm, okay? Thinking it was the weirdest thing ever that I was sitting in my room sticking my tongue out to a total stranger over facetime.
I later figured out that this is common in Aryuvedic medicine, they can tell so much by looking at your tongue as it is the “beginning of our digestive tract”.
Mine at the time had a thin white layer running from the back all the way to the front. I had never noticed. This was a layer of toxins, gross bacteria that is just sitting on my tongue. I was horrified. EW.
The next day I ordered my first tongue scraper. Click here to purchase mine. I have never looked back. I use it minimum once, sometimes twice daily.
HOW TO TONGUE SCRAPE
Every morning before you eat, drink or brush your teeth and every night before you go to sleep (optional).
You start at the very back of your tongue near your throat and with gentle pressure you scrape all the way to the tip of your tongue. Repeat this 5-10 times.
Each time you scrape there will be white mucus-like stuff on the scraper, rinse that off before scraping again. I use a steel tongue scraper which is more efficient than a plastic one according to my research, but I have also read a lot of articles that suggest using a copper tongue scraper is even better!
BENEFITS
- It reduces the icky bacteria in the mouth that negatively impacts your gums, teeth and overall oral health
- Helps remove the bacteria associated with bad breath
- Increases the function of your taste buds so you’re able to taste better
- Helps with overall digestion and also removes the food particles left over on your tongue
- It stimulates your internal organs
It is crazy that dentists don't suggest that you do this. I would choose tongue scraping over flossing every time. I still floss. They're both important. But, seriously. Get on it.
